Zaqatala (city)

Zaqatala (Russian Закаталы / Sakataly ) is a city in Azerbaijan. It is the capital of the district Zaqatala. The town has 2008 inhabitants and is located about 19,000 on the river Tala.

Culture

The downtown from the 19th century is still partly preserved. There are the remains of a fortress, which was built in the 1830s from Russia and served as a prison for the former crew of the Potemkin after a failed revolution in 1905. Also located in the city an abandoned church and a historical museum. Since 1967 Zaqatala owning the municipal law.

Traffic

The city is connected to the network of the Azerbaijan Railway, the route of Yevlax after Bardala. Through the town the A315 trunk road runs from Mingəçevir the Georgian border. There is also a small runway.
