The Rabbit Island (Russian Заячий остров, as Sajatschi Island known ) is a single island in the Neva River in Saint Petersburg, Russia. The Kronwerksgraben separates it from the northern Petrograd island and is connected thereto by two bridges, the Kronwerkski and the Joannowski Bridge, the oldest bridge of Saint Petersburg.

History

The Rabbit Island was mostly swampy, uninhabited and insignificant to 1703, to Peter I began to rely on her the Peter and Paul Fortress, for which he himself laid the foundation stone. Until the late 19th century, there were three channels within the fort, which divided the island into four parts. The canals were filled in the late 19th century. The island provides picturesque views of the historic center of the city and on the Neva.

During the Red Terror, the island was the scene of massacres of enemies of the state. The remains of the victims were discovered recently in the construction of a road to a parking garage in a mass grave. Some estimate that the number of victims who are buried on the island, is in the thousands. The human rights organization Memorial is currently trying to convince the authorities of the local tombs are to be investigated archaeologically.
