Zbąszyń

Zbąszyń ( German Bentschen ) is a city in the powiat Nowotomyski in the Greater Poland Voivodeship, Poland. It is also seat of the urban and rural community.

Geography

Zbąszyń located about 100 km east of Frankfurt (Oder) and about 75 km west of Poznan ( Poznań). Bathed it is from the Obra. The railway line Berlin- Poznan -Warsaw - Moscow, which was created in 1870, which crosses the city.

History

The first written record dates from 1231, after already in 1311 a city charter was awarded to Bentschen. Thus Bentschen one of the oldest cities in Poland. By the end of the 14th century Bentschen was owned by princes and kings. The then King Władysław II Jagiello gave the city in 1393 the voivode of Mazovia January Głowacz, whose family changed its name from Nałęcz on Zbąszy; hence the present name Zbąszyń. From 1613 Bentschen came into the possession of the tribal family Ciświcki who finished the construction of the castle. Part of this castle still stands today in the Municipal Park. In 1700 the tribal family GARCZYNSKI took over the seat

After the second partition of Poland in 1793, the city now belonged to Prussia. The train route Frankfurt ( Oder) poses was built in 1870. The Treaty of Versailles settled the boundary shift, so that Bentschen heard since 1920 and, as a border town to Poland. The road of January 17, 1920 bears witness to this.

End of October 1938, the Poles action, the deportation of about 15,000 Polish Jews from Germany. Poland, however, has its own citizens of the Jewish faith in Zbąszyń refused entry. This therefore had several weeks before the German border crossing New Bentschen (now Zbąszynek ) camp. For Herschel Grynszpan, whose parents were concerned, this was an opportunity to shoot the German embassy staff Ernst vom Rath in Paris.

Attractions

Fürstenburg

Part of the prince's castle, which was built in 1627, is now a city museum. The underlying Städt. Castle Park contains some ruins from the era.

St. Mary's Church

Built around the year 1757-1796 Mary's Church (or even rococo church ) is a Roman Catholic Baroque church was built on swampy ground. The two spiers are now held in place with ropes.

School of Music

In the music school Zbąszyń is the only class of Poland with the specialist folk instrument teaching.

Jezioro Błędno

A beach for leisure with a beautiful view gives the 760 -acre Jezioro Błędno ( Bentschener lake ), which forms a part of the Obra. There are also sailing ship, boat tours and canoe tours can be arranged. Fishing clubs are also to be found there. The nearest airports are in Babimost ( Bomst ) (approx. 18 km) and Poznan ( Poznań) (about 70 km).

Zbąszyń has since December 16, 2004 partnership relations with the Office Brieskow- Finkenheerd.
