Zbigniew Karkowski

Zbigniew Karkowski ( born March 17, 1958 in Krakow, Poland, † December 12, 2013 in Peru ) was an avant-garde composer and musician in the field of electronic and electro - acoustic music. He dealt mainly with radical electronic pad sound design and understood his music as an objection to the academic new music that does not get rid of their roots in the 19th century.

Life and work

Karkowski studied composition and aesthetics of music ( contemporary music) in Gothenburg and computer music at the Chalmers University of Technology. After he had finished his education in Sweden, he studied for a year Sonology at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. Since 1994 he lived and worked in Tokyo and was active in the local underground noise scene.

Karkowski worked with acoustic and electro- acoustic instruments. He has written pieces for large orchestra as well as opera, and various chamber music pieces that have been performed by various ensembles in Sweden, Poland and Germany. With Edwin van der Heide and Atau Tanaka was a founding member of the electroacoustic music performance trio sensor band. Invented with the formation sensor band and realized Karkowski a monumental, 120 -square-foot musical instrument called Soundnet. For mutation ( 1999), he obtained permission inclusion in a temple in Kyoto.

He died in 2013 from pancreatic cancer.
