Zbigniew Preisner

Zbigniew Antoni Preisner ( born May 20, 1955 in Bielsko -Biała) is a Polish composer. His original name is Zbigniew Kowalski, but he later gave the name of his wife.

He became internationally known for his film scores, especially his work for the director Krzysztof Kieślowski. Wojciech Kilar In addition, he is the most important Polish-born film score composer.

Life

He studied history and philosophy in Kraków, but never had music lessons. Preisner began teaching himself by writing down notes from listening to records. Preisner is best known for his work on Kieślowski's films. Some of these films mention the fictitious Dutch composer named Van den Bude Mayer and Preisner wrote the music, which is referred to in the film as the Van den Bude Mayer. After the music for Three Colors: Blue had written, he was asked by Hollywood producer Francis Ford Coppola, if he would write the music for The Secret Garden (directed by Agnieszka Holland).

Although Preisner was closely associated with Kieślowski, he has also written for other directors, he won a César (1996) for his score for Jean Becker's Elisa. Preisner won, among others a César (1994) for Three Colors: Red, and a Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival in 1997 for The Iceland on Bird Street.

Joni Mitchell's Travelogue CD, released in 2002, includes a version of price Listeners Song for the unification of Europe, originally written for Three Colours: Blue.

1998 wrote Preisner 's Requiem for my friend, his first large-size work, which was not intended for the movie. It was originally called the prosaic work ( text Krzysztof Piesewicz / Staging: Kieślowski ) thought by Kieślowski's death, however, it was the requiem for his friend.

Preisner also wrote the theme music for the monumental 26-part BBC documentary People's century ( 1998). In addition, he worked with David Gilmour. At the end of " On An Iceland " tour of Gilmour in Gdansk Preisner conducted the 40 -piece string orchestra of the Polish Baltic Philharmonic. He was also responsible for the orchestral arrangements by David Gilmour's album " On An Iceland " responsible (title: Castellorizon, on to Iceland, Take a Breath, Red Sky at Night, This Heaven, Then I Close My Eyes, Smile, A Pocketful of Stones Where We Start).

His musical stylistics is mainly romantic, with influences of Jean Sibelius. He exploited in Kieślowski musics especially strong dynamic contrasts, string ensembles and unusual instruments such as the organ.
