Zdeněk Nejedlý

Zdeněk Nejedlý ( born February 10, 1878 in Leitomischl; † March 9, 1962 in Prague) was a Czech historian, literary critic and musicologist and from 1945 communist politician.

Life

Nejedlý attended high school in Litomyšl and studied since 1896 History and Aesthetics at the Faculty of Arts of Charles University in Prague. In the same year he went to the Caucasus, where he attended Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy. At the University he was taught by Jaroslav Goll, Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk and Otakar Hostinský, as well as private music theory Zdeněk Fibich. In 1905 he became a lecturer in 1909 and 1919 Associate Professor of Musicology at the Charles University. In the twenties, he joined the Communist Party and became its active member.

After the occupation of Czechoslovakia by the German army in 1939 Nejedlý emigrated to the Soviet Union where he taught at the Moscow State University 's history. In 1941 he was elected Deputy Chairman of the total Slavic Committee, from 1945 until 1953, he assumed the post of Minister of Culture, 1946-1948, the Ministry of Labour and Social in government Klement Gottwald I, 1952, he was elected president of the newly founded Czechoslovak Academy of sciences. This office he held until 1962.

Works

Nejedlýs works are peppered with socialist theories. He propagated works by Smetana and Alois Jirásek, the latter also from self-interest, since he referred royalties from it.
