Zemgale

Semgallen ( Latvian Zemgale ) is one of the four historic landscapes in Latvia. It is to the left of the Daugava ( Western Dvina German ) and is adjacent to Livonia, Latgale and Courland, to which the boundaries are less clearly defined. The eastern part of Zemgale is called Sēlija or Oberlettland.

In the early modern period Semgallen was a part of the Duchy of Courland and Semgallen, which was converted into the Russian province of Courland in 1795 and then finally came to Latvia. For this reason Semgallen received not have its own star in the coat of arms of Latvia, but is represented together with Courland.

The land is mostly flat. In addition to the Daugava River, the most important river is the Lielupe ( German Courland Aa).

The biggest tourist attraction is the castle Rundāle at Bauska ( German Bauske ).
