Zhag'yab County

Zhag'yab ( Drag'yab; Tibetan for " ledge ") is a county in the district Qamdo of the Tibet Autonomous Region in China. The name refers to the place of meditation of the first patron of the area, the I. Dagyab Kyabgön, a cave under a rock ledge.

The circle lies in the far east of Tibet on the upper reaches of the Mekong River, about 60 km south of the seat of government from Qamdo. It has an area of 8250.61 km ² and 53,628 inhabitants ( 2004). At the census in 2000 the figure was 53 009. Council is based in the greater community Yêndum ( dbyen ' dum དབྱེན་འདུམ་ / Yānduō Zhen烟 多 镇) with 9,314 inhabitants ( census 2000). In the far west of the circle the airport runways Bamda protrude from Baxoi after Zhag'yab into it.

The landscape is characterized by fertile river oases with fortified village-like rural settlements as well as distinctive, deep red, barren rocky landscapes with vertically standing geological layers and wide, green mountain meadows.

The inhabitants live mainly from agriculture or as nomads. A modern infrastructure does not exist. The horse is used as a travel and transport in the rough area whose plains and valleys lie at altitudes 3100-4200 meters.
