Zhang Leping

Zhang Leping (Chinese张乐平, Pinyin Zhang Leping, born November 10, 1910 in Jiaxing, Zhejiang, † September 27, 1992 ) was a Chinese cartoonist.

1935 Zhang created the figure Sanmao (三毛, San Mao ), an orphan in the Shanghai of the 1930s and the early 1940s. With these cartoons series, he wanted to show how much children had to suffer the Second Sino-Japanese War. The figure was very popular and still is today in China very well known. It resulted in several films and television series with Sanmao. Other Manhuas Zhang ( like Mr. Wang and Miss Bee) could not reach Sanmaos popularity. Zhang created 1935-1937 over 200 cartoons with Sanmao, the war then forced him, however, only to 1946 to subscribe for additional works with the figure again. A total of 261 Sanmao cartoons arose under his pen.

Also the mid-1930s, he began, as well as Qianyu Ye and Feng Zikai to create anti-Japanese cartoons.

In the 1950s he worked for the Shanghai People 's Fine Arts Publishing House, Shanghai Youth and Children 's Publishing House and Shanghai-based Jiefang Ribao newspaper (解放 日报).
