Zhang Yuan

Zhang Yuan (Chinese张 元/张 元, Pinyin Zhang Yuan, born in 1963 in Nanjing, People's Republic of China) is a Chinese film director.

Life

Zhang received in 1989 at the Beijing Film Academy with a degree in cinematography. His first film "Mama" (妈妈) from 1992 about a mother and her child was mentally zurückgeliebenes, though approved by the Chinese authorities, but the spread was limited. Zhang therefore decided to turn his next films without permission, Beijing Bastards (1993 ), Sons ( 1996) and The Square (1994 ) were officially banned.

In these films, Zhang showed the apolitical life of an underground youth culture and problems of modern society, such as alcoholism. In the documentary The Square, he tells about the events at Tiananmen Square in 1989. Beijing Bastards, he turned to the Chinese rock star Cui Jian, is considered the first important film of the so-called sixth generation of Chinese film directors.

Abroad, the film East Palace, West Palace (1996 ) was played over homosexuality in many cinemas. Despite the ban, he traveled to the Cannes Film Festival, where the film was shown. Then, his passport was revoked, after eight months and Zhang's agreement to cooperate with the Film Board, he got back to pass.

Through the cooperation with the authorities after that it was possible that Zhang's films for the first time were allowed in China, are shown even if only in a modified form. Funded Zhang had his films mostly their own funds, which he took from the production of music videos and commercials. Only East Palace, West Palace has been shown in international cinemas.

For his film Seventeen Years ( 1999) he received at the Venice Film Festival award for best director.
