Zhongshan (Chinese中山 市) is a prefecture -level city in Guangdong Province, China.

General data

Zhongshan, with an area of 1,800 km ² ( 1.1 % of the area of Guangdong ) is the second smallest of the 21 prefecture-level cities of Guangdong. It has 1.38 million inhabitants (1.66 % of the population of Guangdong ). The population density is 767 people per km ². Zhongshan is the origin of about 700,000 overseas Chinese and residents of Hong Kong and Macao.

History

In the Tang Dynasty, the area now Zhongshan, which was then called Xiangshan (香山) belonged to the then district Dongguan (东莞 县). In 1152, during the Song Dynasty, it was separated and an independent county Xiangshan (香山 县) made ​​. 1866, the Chinese revolutionary leader and statesman Sun Yat-sen ( China better known as Sun Zhongshan ) in the former village Cuiheng (翠亨村) of today's large community Nanlang (南朗 镇) was born. After his death in 1925 the county in his honor in Zhongshan District (中山 县) has been renamed. 1961, the District Zhuhai (珠海 县) from Zhongshan has been solved. Geography

Zhongshan is located in the Pearl River delta, on the western shore of the estuary of the river in the South China Sea. It borders the prefectures of Guangzhou and Foshan in the north, Jiangmen to the west and Zhuhai in the south. The climate is subtropical and oceanic in Zhongshan.
