Zigfrīds Anna Meierovics

Zigfrīds Anna Meierovics (. * 24 Januarjul / February 5 1887greg in Durbe; . † August 22, 1925 at Tukums ) was the first Foreign Minister of Latvia and later during two terms in office and Prime Minister of the country. He was co-founder of the Latvian Farmers' Union.

Meierovics was born into a Jewish doctor and his wife Anna Latvian family. His mother died two days after his birth. Because his father was diagnosed with a mental illness, Meierovics grew up in the family of an uncle in Sabile. He studied at the Riga Polytechnic.

After 1911, Meierovics engaged in various Latvian organizations, including in the Latvian Society Riga. During World War II, he worked in various Latvian Refugee Committee and the organizing committee of the Latvian Riflemen with. After the February Revolution of 1917 he went to Riga and became a politician.

In negotiations with the provisional Russian government and with representatives of the Entente in London, he strove to Latvian independence. On November 11, 1918, he was the one who as a member of the Latvian Provisional National Council ( Latviešu Pagaidu Nacionālā Padome ) accepted the written confirmation authorizing the United Kingdom, the statehood of Latvia de facto recognized.

Meierovics was posted on November 19, 1918 the first Foreign Minister of the Republic of Latvia, the day before had declared their independence. This office he held continuously from until 25 January 1925. He was also a deputy in the Latvian People's Council ( Latvijas Tautas Padome ), Latvian Constituent Assembly ( Satversmes Sapulce ) and later in the Latvian Parliament ( Saeima ). Between 1921 and 1924 he was twice prime minister of his country.

Among his greatest accomplishments include the peace treaties with Germany and the Soviet Union in 1920, the de jure recognition of Latvia by the Allies, the preparation of a defense alliance with Estonia and of his country's accession to the League of Nations.

Zigfrīds Anna Meierovics died 38 years old on August 22, 1925 in a traffic accident near Tukums.
