Žihárec

Žihárec ( until 1948 slovak " Žigard "; Hungarian Zsigárd ) is a municipality in Okres Šaľa in Slovakia.

Location

The town is located south of the city Šaľa in Nitriansky kraj, the neighboring towns are Tešedíkovo, Diakovce, Neded, Vlčany, Kráľov Brod and Selice. The landscape is essentially rural in nature and very flat and is part of the Slovak Danube lowland.

History

The village was first mentioned in writing in 1251 as Sygart. During the Turkish wars of the place in the 16th century has been greatly depopulated. 1910, the county located in the former Pressburg place 2626 inhabitants, of whom 2624 were Hungarian stocky. In 1918 he came to the newly formed Czechoslovakia. After the First Vienna Award of the location of late 1938 to 1945 was a part of Hungary.

Population

In the past Žihárec was an almost purely Hungarian village. Still outweigh the Hungary with about 75%. In addition to Slovaks also Roma live in the village. Except for the Slovak language to the people of Žihárec operate the majority of the Hungarian.
