The Žilina's Railway Station ( Železničná stanica Žilina) is a railway station in the Slovak city of Zilina. It is an important railway junction in Slovakia, with three main lines and a branch line, which are linked at the station. These are: the railway line Bratislava - Žilina and Košice - Žilina railway line forming the Slovak west-east axis, on the railway line Žilina - Bohumín with connections to the Czech Republic and Poland and the railway line Žilina - Rajec.

The station is located on the Pan-European Transport Corridor No. Va ( Bratislava - Žilina - Košice - Uzhhorod - Kiev).

Location

The station is located northeast of the center of Žilina at the Pavol Országh Hviezdoslava road. It offers connecting flights to the local public transport network, which is served by buses and trolley buses.

History

The station was opened on 8 January 1871 the route Teschen Zilina in the context of the construction of Košice- Berger train ( Ks.Od. ) in what was then Austria -Hungary, and became a through station with the commissioning of the extension of the Ks.Od. Eastwards on December 8, 1871. Railway junction to the station with the completion of the line Trenčín - Zilina, now part of the railway line Bratislava - Žilina was.

In 1941 the construction of the new station building at the site of the original after the administration building had been completed in 1940. Due to the approaching front during the Second World War, the site was bombed in 1944 and was damaged. Finally, the new building was completed in 1946.

The railway infrastructure of the station is now the Železnice Slovenskej Republiky ( ZSR ). The trains are operated by the Železničná spoločnosť Slovensko ( ZSSK ).
