Zilupe Municipality

The district Zilupe ( Zilupes novads ) is the easternmost district of Latvia lying on the border with Russia and Belarus.

Population

The district consists of three municipalities ( pagasts ) Lauderi, Pasiene and Zaļesje and the administrative center Zilupe. 3651 inhabitants ( 2010) live in the district Zilupe.

In 2000, the then 4271 inhabitants of the four municipalities of the following nationalities: Russian 55.3%, 20.8% Latvian, 18.6% white Russian, Ukrainian 0.09% and 0.01 % Polish.

The district maintains Zilupe with the Lower Saxon town of Bad ground pond twinned.

Traffic

The district is the European route 22, which starts in Holyhead in Wales and ends in Ishim in Russia, as well as the railway line from Riga to Moscow runs.

Tourism

In the community Pasiene is the tri-border region of Latvia, Russia and Belarus. This is a popular destination for tourists.
