Zinc fluoride is a chemical compound of zinc and fluorine from the group of halides.
Production and representation
Zinc fluoride can be obtained by direct reaction of the zinc fluoride, or by reaction of hydrogen fluoride with zinc with the formation of hydrogen ( H2). It also occurs as a tetrahydrate. Alternatively, the recovery of hydrogen fluoride and zinc carbonate possible.
Properties
Zinc fluoride has a rutile crystal structure (space group P42/mnm ) with six zinc atoms which (in contrast to the other zinc halides ) leads to an ionic bond, and the poor solubility in water. Zinc fluoride is hydrolyzed in hot water to Zinkhydroxidfluorid Zn ( OH) F.
Use
Zinc fluoride is used as a wood preservative and can be used for the preparation of other compounds, such as fluorine Phosphortrifluorid.
