Zirconium ( III) chloride is an inorganic chemical compound of zirconium from the group of chlorides.
Production and representation
Zirconium ( III) chloride can be obtained by reduction of zirconium ( IV) chloride or aluminum with zirconium.
Properties
Zirconium ( III) chloride is present in two modifications. α - zirconium ( III) chloride is a blue-black crystalline powder having a hexagonal crystal structure isotypic with that of α - titanium (III ) chloride with the space group P3m1 (a = 5.961 Å, c = 9.669 Å). The β - modification is as olive needles before and also has a hexagonal crystal structure, but with the space group P63/mcm (a = 6.382 Å, c = 6.135 Å). In air, it oxidizes to ZrOCl2.
