Žitište ( Serbian Cyrillic Житиште; Hungarian: Bégaszentgyörgy; German: Sankt Georgen an der Bega; Romanian: Jitişte ) is a town in Vojvodina, Serbia. The city has, according to the census in 2002, 3242, the community Žitište nearly 20,400 inhabitants and is located in the central Banat.

History

The place Žitište is one of the oldest settlements in the municipality, whose name can be derived from the Serbian word wheat ( Жито / Žito ). The name of the town changed in the past several times. The oldest dated around 1390 mentioned as Begej Svetog Đurđa followed at the time of the monarchy, the name of the Hungarian family Szentgyörgyi whose derivation in Serbian Šenđurađ and Senđurađ the city to 1947 wore until it was renamed in Žitište.

During the Turkish wars, the city was completely abandoned and held 1723 of cartographers as uninhabited areas, while Serbian and Romanian settlers are mentioned only a year later.

Demography

In the city live 2585 full -round residents, whose average age is 38.9 years ( 40.4 for females and 37.4 in the male population ). In the 1084 households on average 2.99 people live. Statistics from 2002 show a Serb majority and a growing population.
