Zulfiqar (tank)

Zulfiqar is the first Iranian main battle tank, named after the sword of the Prophet Mohammed. There are currently three versions.

Development

The development began in the early 1990s, the first prototypes were completed in 1993. In 1996, the Zulfiqar 1 in series production. The first version is probably based on the T- 72 and the M48 Patton or its successor, the M60 battle tank that Iran has. Meanwhile, two other models have been spotted, said Zulfiqar 3 outside the U.S. M1 Abrams is similar.

Probably all versions have the same 125 - mm gun of the type 24A6, which is also used in the Russian T -80 tanks, and some models of the T -72. It is also assumed that all models are equipped with an automatic recharging system and have a modern fire control system of the type EFCS 3. Currently, the latest version Zulfiqar 3 is in series production.
