Already in 1864 a new station building was built by the NOB; by the introduction of the line of train here, was a key station. It was built according to the plans of Jakob Friedrich Wanner, who also designed the former main railway station on existing wall parts of the central building of the old station and completed the opening of the line to train. The old station was located approximately where today the southeastern corner of the Schnellguthalle (now Planzer ) is located. The two branches of the wedge route station were not moved during the construction of the current station.

The current station is architecturally one of the most important buildings of the SBB and one of the reasons why this 2005 received the Wakker Prize for a high- building culture.
