The Zurich Enge train station (409 m above sea level. M. ) is one of thirteen SBB railway stations on the territory of the city of Zurich and located in the same Enge.

History

The first station Enge was built in 1875, with the opening of the left-bank Seebahn the Swiss Northeastern Railway (NOB ) from Zurich main station via Thalwil, Pfäffikon and brick bridge to Naefels. The station building was on the tunnel road in the former urban district II Seebahn in 1897 with the breakthrough of the Zimmerberg to the Gotthard railway feeder and the increase in traffic forced the early 20th century, the SBB to relocate the Seebahn in the area of Zurich city.

The Seebahn was transferred between the run-up to the main railway station and Wollishofen in depth and electrified so that the quarters Wiedikon and narrowness received new stations. The installation was completed in 1927 and opened the new Bahnhof Enge. The Seebahn reached Wiedikon forth the Enge train station by the new Ulmberg tunnel ( 848 m) and disappears into the narrow tunnel (903 m) to Wollishofen. Between the new station building and the tunnel Ulmberg the Bederstrasse crosses on a bridge station site.

Through the station performs the dual Seebahn, what used to be the express trains towards Gotthard, and the direction of Graubunden wrong. Even international passenger trains stopped at the Enge train station, last night still trains not operated the terminal station Zurich HB. After the express train were omitted, the third track, the platform edge was lifted in the 1990s, but extended into the tunnel. The former track between the island platform and the western retaining wall was filled. 2007 were built by the platforms and a lift from the former island platform for Bederstrasse stairs, so that it is accessible for wheelchair users.

Einstein would have - similar to Wiedikon station - a third track to Zurich train station to lead Giesshübel. For this purpose, but another tunnel would have been necessary, which was never built.

Station building

The building of the Enge station was built between 1925 and 1927 from Ticino granite, so the space in front of it Tessinerplatz means. The architects were the brothers Otto and Werner Pfister, which the Stuttgart main station served as a model for the axisymmetric building.

After the operation, the left-bank Seebahn was automated in the late 1990s began to dispel the reception building and supplying new uses. It disappeared among others, the premises of the old, local signal box as well as the ticket office, the luggage counter area and storage space, which owned the station for lack of a freight shed. Of the former facilities on the ground floor you will find everywhere traces how the former switches which are now used as a take-away counter, or the glazed front of the interlocking space on track 1, which indicates a display case in the wholesale distribution inside the building.

Since the completion of the renovation work shops and restaurants dominate the ground floor. The classic function of the station building only occurs at the edge to light. The SBB itself operate the station now only a SBB travel agency, who shall exercise the function of a Bill served Adige age. Since November 2006, the Enge train station SBB part of the project is " multi station ", which is to upgrade 23 of the largest railway stations in Switzerland.
