Zürich Tram Museum

The Tram-Museum Zurich ( TMZ ) is the Zurich Tram Museum since 1989 and reflects the history of the Zurich tram. It is supported by the 1967 founded, the same club. Until the opening of the Bernese Tram Museum in 2007 it was the only tram museum in Switzerland.

History

After several temporary stay of the club Tram-Museum Zurich was given the opportunity the former depot Wartau in today's district of Zurich Hoengg durable to use. The three- employed small depot, which was built in 1898 for the then " Tram Zurich - Hoengg ", was set up as a volunteer -run Trammuseum for the operation and opened in 1989.

In the museum have since individual original vehicles - the oldest dating from 1897 - be visited, collected by the club since the 1960s, and maintains. In addition, the museum shows the development of the Zurich tram network. Was introduced simultaneously with the museum called the Museum line.

As the museum in the depot Wartau the demands of a professional historical exhibition opportunity was not enough and had to be stopped several vehicles for reasons of space in the regular accounts of the Zurich Public Transport (VBZ ), a new museum in the former, in 1997 disused depot Burgwies in Hirslanden district was established. The opening of the new museum was on 26 May 2007. During the same year the club TMZ celebrated its 40th anniversary, while the Zurich tram celebrated its 125th anniversary.

The new tram museum opening times have been greatly expanded and outsourced the operation of the museum in a foundation that is responsible for the professional museum operations. The line took over the historian Esther Germann. As a further innovation runs the museum line with the line number 21, which runs on the last weekend of the month January to November on Saturdays and Sundays between downtown and the main railway station to the museum. In December Advent journeys take place alternatively.

The depot Wartau place after the move to the new museum site as a workshop of the Association Tram-Museum Zurich further use. This was accommodated by the end of 2006 at the ITR Depot hardware, where each tram vehicles have been restored.
