.bit

. bit is a pseudo-top -level domain of Namecoin project. It is not permitted by ICANN and thus not part of the corresponding official DNS.

The term (dot) bit was chosen due to the proximity to the technical peer -to-peer currency Bitcoin, but a different block chain is used. Each user is required to maintain a complete, regularly updated list of all registered URLs. There is no central authority necessary censorship is thus excluded.

To access appropriate sites, it is necessary to pass the request through an appropriate proxy or perform with the help of a vehicle equipped with additional software DNS server.

Currently about 130,000. Bit addresses are registered.
