1- chloronaphthalene is a chlorinated derivative of naphthalene and one of the chlorinated aromatic compounds.

Production and representation

1- chloronaphthalene is directly obtained by chlorination of naphthalene, which besides the two monochlorinated isomeric compounds 1 -chloronaphthalene and 2- chloronaphthalene even more highly substituted derivatives such as dichloro- and Trichlornaphthaline arise.

Use

1- chloronaphthalene was used until the 1970s as a common solvent for oils, fats, and DDT. It is also used for determining the refractive index of crystals. 1- chloronaphthalene was used from the 1920s to the 1970s in a mixture with higher chlorinated chloronaphthalenes in wood preservatives. They set up in the 1950s is the most important synthetic compounds with fungicidal and insecticidal properties, but were displaced by pentachlorophenol ( PCP).
