1 -methylcyclopropene (1- MCP) is a gaseous unsaturated, cyclic hydrocarbon.

Use

1 -methylcyclopropene is used in fruit and vegetable production to delay the natural aging of the harvested fruit or vegetable. Already off gassing with 1-MCP prevented by coating the ethylene receptors in the cell membranes of a recording of the biochemical maturation inducing ethylene gas through the cell. The further maturation process is slowed down significantly after 1- MCP application.

1-MCP ( trade name " Smart Fresh", " cyclodextrins " ) is approved worldwide as a fumigant since 2005 in the EU, the USA and some other countries and is considered as a supplement and improvement of conventional cooling and CA storage methods.

Only the manufacturer Wacker Chemie annually produces 5,000 tons of the chemical.

The use of apples is approved in the EU, the use need not be marked.

Criticism

After fumigation with 1- MCP, the consumer is not able to identify the age of the fruit, ie whether it, for example, a week or two years old. Aging takes place yet, for example in the degradation of vitamin C.
