- Royal Election of 1002 APRIL 30: The throne candidate Ekkehard I. Margrave of Meissen is murdered in Pöhlde.
- June 7: Henry II is chosen in Mainz by the barons of Bavaria and the eastern Franks against the votes of Swabia and in the absence of the House of Lorraine, Saxony and Thuringia to the king and crowned immediately thereafter.
