(1042 ) Amazon is an asteroid of the main belt, which was discovered on 22 April 1925 by the German astronomer Karl Wilhelm Reinmuth at Heidelberg State Observatory king - chair of the University of Heidelberg.

At the suggestion of the astronomer Gustav Stracke, the asteroid is named after the South American Amazon River.
