1,1,1 -trichloroethane ( obsolete trivial name: methyl chloroform ) belongs to the family of chlorinated hydrocarbons. It is isomeric with 1,1,2-trichloroethane.

Production

1,1,1-trichloroethane is prepared by chlorination of 1,1- dichloroethane, or by the addition of hydrogen chloride in 1,1- dichloroethene.

Properties

1,1,1- Trichloroethane is a colorless liquid with a typical ethereal odor (similar to the smell of chloroform). It is hardly miscible with water, so hydrophobic and lipophilic, and its vapors are heavier than air. Like other chlorinated hydrocarbons also, it is unstable to light, air and especially moisture. The stabilization is effected by adding up to 6 % dioxane or 2-butanol during the production. With alkali, alkaline earth and other metal powders, it reacts explosively.

Use

1,1,1- Trichloroethane is a starting material for the synthesis of polychlorinated organic compounds by addition reactions with unsaturated compounds.

1,1,1-trichloroethane was used as a solvent in paints, adhesives and for the cleaning of metallic workpieces, the glass and optical devices. It may also be included in correction fluids. Tipp-Ex contains 1,1,1 -trichloroethane as a solvent, but it exists because of the potential health hazard even a water-based variant. As part of the recognition of the ozone hole problem is its importance has decreased as the solvent.

Safety

Despite the lower toxicity than carbon tetrachloride vapors cause the mucous membranes. Liver and kidney injuries may occur by absorption into the body. Gaseous recorded trichloroethane is almost completely excreted through the breath, a small portion is metabolized in the body to trichloroacetic acid and trichloroethanol. In compliance with the MAK value is a fruit damage is excluded. How many solvent degreasing effect on the skin, it acts in an injurious extent. It can cause respiratory, digestive tract and eye irritation. It may occur to unconsciousness and other brain disorders dizziness, headache, drowsiness.

The liberated by photochemical processes in the stratosphere, chlorine atoms can damage the ozone layer.
