The asteroid was discovered by the American astronomer CS Shoemaker and EM Shoemaker at Palomar Observatory (IAU code 675) on 10 December 1993 and continues to Peleus, who was married to the sea nymph Thetis King of Thessaly and father of Achilles, named.
