History

With the progressive electrification of the Japanese regional railway lines in the 1950s, the demand grew to a powerful multiple unit that was able to accomplish even larger slopes in the mountainous regions of Japan's inland. The series 111 and 113, which had previously been developed and have externally very similar to the 115 series were not designed with an output of 100 kW to use these regions so that only short trains could be formed in order to overcome the slope can. In addition, the series were 111 and 113 is not designed for cold, snow -rich weather in the winter months.

The development of the 115 series was completed in 1963 with the version 115-0, which first came into use on the Takasaki Line. In the 20 - year production period the 115 series a variety of options for different application purposes has been established. In total, over 2,000 units were produced.

After the privatization of the Japanese National Railways trains in the possession of JR East, JR West and the Shinano tetsudō went on. Most trains have now been upgraded and equipped with improved engines. Depending on the region, the features of the 115 series are painted differently.
