1,2- dimethylhydrazine is a liquid organic chemical compound selected from the group of the hydrazine derivatives. It is an isomer of 1,1- dimethylhydrazine.
Properties
1,2- dimethylhydrazine is a flammable liquid whose vapors are heavier than air and may form explosive mixtures with this. It is highly volatile and completely miscible with water.
Use
1,2- dimethylhydrazine is no longer manufactured in Germany. In animal experiments in the field of oncology 1,2- dimethylhydrazine is used to induce colon cancer.
Environmental and toxicity
The liquid is very hazardous, it is toxic to aquatic organisms. In animal experiments it has been classified as a carcinogen and is a feeding, breathing and contact poison. In the liver, 1,2- dimethylhydrazine is degraded to the highly carcinogenic azoxymethane. 1,2- dimethylhydrazine is therefore the Prokarzinogen for azoxymethane.
