( 1226 ) Golia is an asteroid of the main belt, which was discovered on April 22, 1930 in Johannesburg by the Dutch astronomer Hendrik van Gent.

The asteroid is named after Jacob Gool ( Jacobus Golius ), an orientalist, who founded the Leiden Observatory in the 17th century and Willibrord Snell succeeded in the chair of mathematics and astronomy at the University of Leiden.
