( 12761 ) Pauwels is an asteroid of the main belt of the Belgian astronomer Eric Walter Elst at the La Silla Observatory ( IAU code 809 ) of the European Southern Observatory in Chile was discovered on October 9, 1993.

The asteroid was named after the Belgian astronomer and astro meters Thierry Pauwels ( born in 1957 ) named, who works at the Observatoire Royal de Belgique and 1996 the local Schmidt camera significantly improved by installing a CCD camera.
