13 is the name of the 19th studio album by the British heavy metal band Black Sabbath. It was released in Europe on 7 June 2013 at the Vertigo Records in the U.S. and Canada on June 11, 2013 in Republic Records and the rest of the world on 10 June 2013 at the Vertigo. 13 is the first studio album since 1995 (Forbidden ). It is also the first Black Sabbath studio album since Never Say Die! (1978), singing on the Ozzy Osbourne and is involved in the songwriting. The album was produced by Rick Rubin.

History

After the album Forbidden 1995 got bad reviews, Tony Iommi ended the cooperation with all the musicians involved, around 1997 to tour with Ozzy Osbourne and Geezer Butler on the Ozzfest tour in 1997. Here, Mike Bordin sat on drums. A little later, the original drummer Bill Ward came back to the band and Black Sabbath thus played for the first time since 1979, the original members. For these concerts the live album Reunion, which was released a year later arose. However, it also contained studio recordings of two new songs, Selling My Soul and Psycho Man, both of which were written by Osbourne and Iommi. However, due to a heart attack by Bill Ward, it did not come to a complete album, although this was being considered.

After that first followed by a hiatus with no concerts until 2005. Through a new album was not spoken during this time. After 2007, a compilation called The Dio Years was released, on which sang the most famous songs from the period as Ronnie James Dio, were included, Ronnie James Dio, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Vinny Appice played some concerts as Heaven and Hell. However, Dio passed away after a short illness with colon cancer, after speculation about a final reunion arose in 2010.

On 16 August 2011, the rumor was spread that the original cast has returned for a reunion. Although Tony Iommi has denied this on his website, he was a day later from a statement which did not rule out a reunion one hundred percent. For November 11, 2011, a major news was announced, which was then released in the form of a video message on YouTube: The original line-up had concealed their reunion for a long time and planned for 2012 a new studio album and a world tour.

In early 2012, however, the cancer of Tony Iommi has been known, after which the tour was initially postponed. In order not to disappoint the fans, should instead Ozzy & Friends ( inter alia with Zakk Wylde and Slash) occur. For the concerts, which also Sabbath bassist Geezer Butler should play a Black Sabbath set was also announced. In February 2012, drummer Bill Ward also announced his departure. Three concerts were in 2012 still held: a concert in the hometown of Birmingham on 19 May, one on the Download Festival at Donington Park, the third in the U.S. at Lollapalooza. In these appearances Tommy Clufetos sat on drums. Then the band went back into the studio.

In January 2013, the album was scheduled for June 2013. It bears the simple title 13 The band also announced that is on the album and on the accompanying tour Brad Wilk of Rage Against the Machine drummer.

On 5 April 2013, the album cover was shown in advance. It is simply designed as burning 13 in nature. These were parts of the song God Is Dead? shown.

Reception

David Rybol of undergrounded.de rated the album as " a strong album, which had a lot of Ozzy, Tony, Geezer and certainly not have expected " and assigns 13 " to the strong metal albums of the year 2013! " One ( Rating 8.0 of 10 points ). For Allmusic, the album was also well received and rated 4.5 of 5.

13 was chosen by the editors of the German music magazine Visions at number 11 in the best albums of 2013.
