14th Chess Olympiad

The 14th Chess Olympiad took place from 26 October to 9 November 1960 in Leipzig (then East Germany) instead.

Survey

It was attended by 40 teams. 232 players took part in the competition, including 26 grandmasters and 37 international masters. In four preliminary groups the teams were determined for the final groups A to C. The first three teams each opening act qualified for the Final Group A, the next three for B, and the rest was C. Both the opening acts as well as the final groups A and B ( each with 12 teams) were discharged as a round robin tournaments, final Group C ( 16 teams ) in the Swiss system ( eleven rounds).

It was played in the ring - Trade House. The chief organizers were Johannes Dieckmann (Chairman of the Organizing Committee ) and Herbert R. Gratz (Chairman of the Executive Committee ) of the GDR. As Chief Judge Vyacheslav Ragozin served from the Soviet Union. The thinking time was 150 minutes for 40 moves, then one hour for each 16 moves. The rankings were determined based on the board points (BP) and Team Points (MP).

During the Chess Olympiad, an international exhibition Chess Through the Ages took place in the City History Museum, which includes an exhibition catalog was published.
