(1566) Icarus

Template: Infobox Asteroid / Maintenance / Error 1

( 1566) is a near-Earth asteroid Icarus ( asteroid ), from the group of Apollo asteroids. These are celestial bodies, their path may cross the Earth's orbit.

This about a kilometer wide asteroid was discovered on June 27, 1949 by Walter Baade and has a relatively bright surface with an albedo of 0.4.

Icarus is between 0,2 AE ( perihelion ) and 2 AE ( aphelion ) on a highly elliptical orbit around the sun. He comes closer to the Sun than Mercury. For this reason, he was named after Icarus, a tragic figure in Greek mythology. This came with the help of self-made wings of the sun too close and crashed.
