15th Infantry Division (Wehrmacht)

The 15th Infantry Division was a military major unit of the Wehrmacht in the German Reich.

History

The Division was established on October 1, 1934 in the course of propagation of the Reichswehr under the codename artillery leader V in Military District V in Würzburg. The infantry regiments were formed here from the 13th ( Württ. ) Infantry Regiment of the former 5th Division, the artillery regiment from parts of the former 5 ( Hess. - Wuertt. ) Artillery Regiment. On October 15, 1935, in unmasking the renamed 15th Infantry Division. At the same time came the newly formed Infantry Regiment 55 to the Division. In October 1936, the division headquarters moved to Frankfurt am Main in the military district IX. The division was mobilized as a division of the first wave formation on August 25, 1939 and thereafter used to secure the western border in the Saar. Here she participated in battles during the French Saar offensive. In February 1940, charges for installation of the 299th Infantry Division were made. In the western campaign in May 1940, the Division used the Association of Army Group A came through Luxembourg and Belgium to France and crossed the beginning of June the Aisne. This was followed by follow-up battles on the Vesle, Marne and Aube up to Nevers on the Loire. By 1941, the division was then stationed as part of the occupation forces in Dijon. Other charges were made in November 1940 to set up the 113th Infantry Division.

In July 1941, the transfer to the Eastern Front and the subordination to the Army Group Centre was. The division came here for the first time during the battle of Mogilev used. She was then involved in the loss-making offensive and defensive fighting in Elnya front bow and later at the battle of encirclement Wjasma. It was followed by the rise of the Nara and defensive fighting on the Schanja during the Battle of Moscow. The Division in early 1942 was then involved in the Battle of Rzhev. In February 1943, the division was transferred back to the Eastern Front and intervened in the defensive battles on the Donets, while she was involved among other things in the battles of Dnepropetrovsk and Krivoy Rog. In August 1944, the Division was virtually destroyed as part of Army Group South Ukraine in Huşi during Operation Jassy - Kishinev. In October 1944 it was reorganized as a combat group Winkler, held for a time in Hungary until they surrendered in May 1945 in Prague before the Red Army.
