( 16682 ) Donati is one of the main asteroid belt, which from the Italian astronomer Marco Cavagna and Valter Giuliani Osservatorio Astronomico on Sormano (IAU code 587 ) was discovered in Sormano on 18 March 1994.

The asteroid was named after the Italian astronomer Giovanni Battista Donati (1826-1873), promoted the spectroscopy of celestial bodies. He examined one of the first, the spectrum of a comet and is the discoverer of six comets, including the visible with the naked eye, designated C/1858 L1 ( Donati ).

He led the government to build 1860-1872 the Arcetri Observatory on a hill near Florence.
