( 16761 ) Hertz is one of the main asteroid belt, which was discovered on October 3, 1996 by the Italian amateur astronomers Vittorio Goretti, from his private observatory in Pianoro from (IAU code 610).

The asteroid was named after the German physicist Heinrich Hertz (1857-1894), who became one of the most important physicists of the 19th century due to its experimental confirmation of James Clerk Maxwell's electromagnetic theory of light.
