The earthquake in Smyrna in 1688 took place on July 10th of the year 1688 at 11:45 clock. It had its epicenter near Smyrna in the Ottoman Empire, now Izmir in Turkey today. The Smyrna - earthquake had an estimated magnitude of 7.0 on the surface wave magnitude scale with a perceived maximum intensity of X (intensive ) on the Mercalli intensity scale and caused the loss of 16,000 lives.

Aftermath

When the city of Smyrna was rebuilt, the houses were mostly built of wood, except for the foundations, where rock was used. This should make the reconstructed buildings more resistant to future earthquakes.
