(172 ) Baucis is an asteroid of the main belt, which was discovered on 5 February 1877 by the French astronomer Nicolas Louis Alphonse Borrelly.

The asteroid was after Baucis, the Greek mythology after her husband Philemon the god Zeus hosted, named. Baucis and Philemon were rewarded by Zeus for their hospitality so that they could die together and were transformed after her death in two trees that are touching as a sign of love with the branches.
