(1809 ) Prometheus is one of the main asteroid belt, which was discovered on September 24, 1960 as part of the Palomar - Leiden survey by the Dutch research team Cornelis Johannes van Houten, Ingrid van Houten - Groeneveld and Tom Gehrels.

The asteroid is a member of the Koronis family, a group of asteroids that is named after (158 ) Koronis. The timeless ( nichtoskulierenden ) orbital elements of ( 1809) Prometheus are almost identical to those of the smaller, if we start from the absolute brightness of 14.4 compared to 11.6, asteroid ( 13680 ) 1997 PY.

The name of ( 1809) Prometheus is derived from the mythological Greek Titan Prometheus.
