The second Wimbledon Championships took from 15 to 20 July 1878 on the grounds of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club.

The second round was a tournament system, consisting of the so-called All- Comers Competition and the subsequent Challenge Round, introduced. The defending champion was automatically ( the Challenge Round) qualified for the finals, where he met the challenger, who previously had to work through the field of participants of the All- Comers competition itself. This system was maintained at a tournament in Wimbledon until 1922.
