The third edition of the Wimbledon Championships took place in 1879 on the grounds of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club instead. 36 of a total of 45 participants competed for the first time. Since last year's winner Frank Hadow had returned to Ceylon and did not compete for the title defense, no Challenge Round was held. The final of the All- Comers Contest tracked about 1,100 spectators.

The Irishman Thomas Vere Goold went for the only time in at Wimbledon and reached the All- Comers final. There he was defeated by the Rev. John Hartley in three sets. Goold, said to have been hung on the final day, was convicted in 1907 for murder and died in exile on Devil's Island in French Guiana.
