The twelfth Wimbledon Championships were in 1888 on the grounds of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club on Worple Road instead. The start of the tournament had to be postponed by three days due to continuous rain that had soaked through the space underground.

Men's Singles

The multiple champion William Renshaw, who had paused in the previous year because of a tennis elbow, entered again. However, he was eliminated in the quarter- final against Willoughby Hamilton, the poor turf conditions are said to have played a role. His brother Ernest Renshaw, however, came to his single title by defeating in the Challenge Round Herbert Lawford in three sets.
