1889 Wimbledon Championships

The 13th Wimbledon Championships were in 1889 on the grounds of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club on Worple Road instead. In the men competed in the individual 24 participants, with the ladies six.

It was the last year in which the brothers Renshaw dominated the tournament's men.

Men's Singles

In the All- Comers final, William Renshaw and the Irishman Harry Sibthorpe Barlow stood against. Barlow was already leading 2-1 in the fourth set records and had four match points, but ultimately gave the set to 10:8 from Renshaw. In the decisive fifth set led Barlow already 5-0 before Renshaw won the set 8-6 in itself for a comeback.

In the Challenge Round defeated William Renshaw his brother Ernest in four sets, winning his seventh and final title. The record of seven titles at Wimbledon was only in 2000 by Pete Sampras, and in 2012 by Roger Federer repeated.

Women's Singles

Last year's winner Charlotte Dod not stepped up to defend their title. In the All- Comers - final, Blanche Bingley and Lena Rice stood against. After Rice won the first set, she forgave the score at 5:3 and 40:15 in the second set three match points. Bingley was able to turn the match and won her second title.

Men's doubles

William and Ernest Renshaw picked up her fifth doubles title, in which they defeated in the final of Ernest Lewis and George Hillyard with 6:4, 6:4, 3:6, 0:6, 6:1.
