The Assam earthquake in 1897 occurred on 12 June 1897 in Assam, British India and had about a magnitude of 8.1 Mw.

It is believed that the epicenter was 32 ​​km under the earth. In an area of 390,000 km ², the masonry of most buildings were destroyed and it was felt in an area of 650,000 km ² of Burma to Delhi. Many buildings in neighboring Bhutan have been greatly damaged. There were several aftershocks.

Despite the strength of the quake, the death rate was 1,500 victims not very high, but the damage was enormous.

Background

The earthquake occurred on the south- south-west side of the Oldhamverwerfung, which forms the northern boundary of the Shillong Plateau in the Indian plate. There was a dislocation of the rejection of at least 11 m, but also a maximum displacement of 16 m was measured, one of the largest ever measured dislocations after an earthquake.
