1919 South American Championship

The Campeonato Sudamericano of 1919 was the third playout of the South American continental championship in football and was held from 11 to 29 May in Brazil instead. Originally the tournament was to take place in 1918, but was postponed due to the Spanish flu.

All matches were played at the Estádio Laranjeiras, the stadium of FC Fluminense in Rio de Janeiro. Since in this Copa America after the last matchday decided a winner, took place between the two teams finish equal on points of Brazil and Uruguay a playoff to win the tournament instead. Arthur Friedenreich scored on presentation of Neco the winner of Brazil and established itself as the first football star of his country and was, together with the Pässgeber scorer of the tournament. Was overshadowed by the tragic death of the competition Uruguayan substitute goalkeeper Roberto Chery.
