1928 Summer Olympics

The Summer Olympic Games in 1928 ( officially Games of the IX. Olympiad called ) found in the Amsterdam district Stadionbuurt ( Netherlands). The only other candidate city was Los Angeles (USA). Los Angeles got the Olympics four years later.

Highlights

  • The main venue was the Olympic stadium of the Dutch architect Jan Wils in the style of the Amsterdam School.
  • For the first time the Olympic flame was lit; also for the first time rose to pigeons.
  • At the opening ceremony of the arrival of the athletes of Greece was led and completed by the team of the Netherlands. This sequence, Greece at the beginning and the host nation at the end, was part of the Olympic protocol.

Outstanding athletes

  • Johnny Weissmuller, as Tarzan, the actor later made a career in Hollywood, won two gold medals in swimming.
  • Paavo Nurmi won his last three Medals of twelve.

Worth mentioning

  • For the first time women's competitions in athletics (100 m, 800 m, 4 x 100 m relay, high jump, discus throw ). It was attended by 101 athletes from some 18 nations, the largest teams presented the United States with 17 and Germany with 16 athletes.
  • In the years 1912-1948 also medals for artistic achievements were awarded to 18 areas in seven Olympic Games. In 1928 there were the following award-winning art competitions: Architectural designs, urban planning designs, sculpture / sculptures, medals and plaques, paintings and prints, drawings and watercolors, other graphic arts, literature / poetry of any kind, Lyrical works and music ( with the subdivisions in music at Art, song compositions, compositions for an instrument and orchestral compositions ).

Competitions

The football and hockey games were discharged from May to June. All other competitions were held July 28 to August 12. There were 109 competitions in 14 sports played (number of competitions in parentheses):

Participant

A total of 46 nations took part in the Summer Olympic Games in 1928. Germany took the first time since the Summer Olympics in 1912 in Stockholm again at the Olympics in part.

For Malta, Panama and Rhodesia it was the first participation in the Olympic Games.
