Prose

  • February: The written in the previous novel Monsieur Gallet, décédé by Georges Simenon appears. The first novel about Inspector Maigret is immediately to be a resounding success.
  • Erich Kästner published the novel Fabian - The story of a moralist as well as the two children novels dots and Anton and the 35th of May, or Conrad rides in the South Seas.
  • Shortly before his death, Arthur Schnitzler's written 1912-1917 under the working title novella delusion escape in the darkness appears.

Drama

  • October 26: The play Mourning Becomes Electra ( Mourning Becomes Electra ) by Eugene O'Neill has a successful premiere at the Guild Theatre on Broadway. Another 150 performances follow.
  • November 2: Tales from the Vienna Woods by Odon von Horvath will be premiered under the direction of Heinz Hilpert at the Deutsches Theater in Berlin. Contributors include Carola Neher, Peter Lorre, Hans Moser, Paul and Paul Dahlke Hörbiger. Despite massive criticism from conservative and right-wing circles the piece is granted a great success.

Scientific literature

  • Kurt Gödel published his most important work About formally undecidable propositions of Principia mathematica and related systems with the proof of Godel's incompleteness theorem.
